The knowledge of an impending departure from home is a powerful game to play with the head and with the heart. Sometimes it is impossible to pull ourselves from the warmth of our womblike environment. However, there is often the hope (and sometimes even the complete belief) that what you find when you leave the place you have always known will better you, and fulfill you in the way that you have always craved. With this optimism also comes fear: the fear of longing, of failure, of having to return to those who believed in you (or those you wanted to prove wrong) with your hands empty, swinging lightly by your side.

The Problem with Taking Yourself Too Seriously

The proud top of a tie emerging from a buttoned suit jacket, the defiant splash of expensive shoes maneuvering through puddles on the sidewalk, a dozen thornless roses that have been pruned to perfection smiling in the awareness of their beauty; all these things, they are like me. As I sit, collapse, into the world which I have created for myself, I am comforted by the harmony of the things that I have put in their proper place.

We even try to beautify the parts of us that are accepted as unattractive; covering our tracks with monograms and shiny faucets. Yet as we perform this meticulous task of using aesthetics to please, it still cannot be more than a request. Please see the parts of me that I want to show you and please ignore the rest; interpret me as I want to be understood not as you think you should. I will kindly do the same for you.
